Periodontics is the diagnosis and treatment of gum disease, which affects not just your gums but your jawbone and wider health if left untreated.
We offer a wide range of periodontal treatments, so you don’t have to go looking for another dentist in Manchester to have gum-related problems investigated and treated. We are also happy to accept periodontal referrals if your dentist does not offer these treatments.
The periodontal treatments we offer at Cheadle Hulme Dental and Cosmetics
Connective tissue graft (for gum recession)
Connective tissue grafts treat an exposed tooth root, which can be problematic as your dentine is unprotected. Dentine is not protected with tooth enamel, leaving your exposed tooth susceptible to erosion and cavities. Gum recession is the name of the condition given when gum tissue starts to pull away from the gums. It is common in patients with gum disease and in patients who have a vigorous brushing technique.
With a connective tissue graft, your dentist can cover the exposed portion of the tooth. This also improves the aesthetic tooth-to-gum ratio, leaving you with a more natural-looking smile line.
We can also perform tunnelling treatment, which involves very little downtime and a conservative procedure. The success rate for tunnelling is in the high 90% category, especially when performed by skilled clinicians such as our dentists in Manchester.
Implant Restoration
Dental implants are affected by a condition called peri-implantitis, which is effectively gum disease for implants.
Our periodontal dentists can rescue implants that have fallen foul to peri-implantitis. We can put together a treatment programme that will address the issue and focus on preventing the condition in the future. This may involve looking at your medical history and lifestyle to identify any aspects that might be contributing to gum disease and peri-implantitis.
Root surface debridement
Root surface debridement removes biofilm, such as plaque and tartar, along the root surface. Treatment is designed to halt gum disease before it affects the bone below your jaw. Using this method, we will use manual tools and ultrasonic scalers, which target the tooth surfaces that sit below the gum line. We may recommend multiple root surface debridement sessions if you have a more advanced level of gum disease.
Crown lengthening
Crown lengthening can be performed to remove excess gum tissue to restore the aesthetic balance between your teeth and gums.
We can also perform functional crown lengthening, the aim of which is to make it possible to perform a restorative or cosmetic dental treatment. This involves exposing more of a tooth so that a restoration (crown or bridge) can be placed efficiently.
Periodontal regeneration
Periodontal regeneration is generally a multidisciplinary process involving different treatments to alleviate gum disease and build back your gum health.
Periodontal regeneration techniques involve:
- Guided tissue regeneration (GTR): this involves procedures that regenerate your gum tissue.
- Bone replacement grafts: bone regeneration techniques can rebuild bone that has been lost as a result of advanced gum disease.
- Pocket reduction: to prevent plaque and tartar from reaching underneath your gum line.
Periodontal maintenance
Periodontal maintenance differs from patient to patient, depending on their unique needs. Once we have performed periodontal treatment to address either gingivitis or periodontitis, we may suggest that you come in for follow-up professional cleanings and check-ups to ensure your gums are healing well after periodontal treatment.
Our dentists in Manchester can also perform ongoing periodontal maintenance for implants that have been treated for peri-implantitis.
Gingivectomy
A gingivectomy involves the removal of gum tissue. This is needed when periodontal pockets (or gaps) have occurred between your teeth and gums. The tissue can be gently trimmed away to make it easier to remove plaque and tartar.
We may also remove gum tissue if it is interfering with your ability to eat or speak.
State-of-the-art equipment for periodontal treatment and diagnosis
We use some of the smartest technology available to examine your mouth, diagnose problems, and reverse periodontal disease and the associated damage it can do to your mouth.
Our intraoral camera displays pictures of your mouth on a large screen, allowing you to see how the disease is affecting your mouth. We also use digital treatment planning to aid in the management of gum disease and our CBCT scanner to examine the condition of your jaw and how gum disease may have affected its density.
Sedation is available for patients who are feeling nervous about either surgical or non-surgical periodontal treatment.
